More information about the Co-op

This is a story of high-quality fair-trade coffee making a critical difference in the lives of coffee farmers. Situated on the shores of Lake Kivu and founded in 2003, SOPACDI (Solidarité Paysanne pour la Promotion des Actions Café et Développement Intégral) was the first Congolese cooperative to earn Fair Trade certification. It wasn’t easy; in addition to politically-driven violence disrupting the life circumstances of the member farmers, this violence also prevented fair-trade inspectors and coffee buyers from visiting the cooperative. To overcome this hurdle, the cooperative was granted an unprecedented exemption to complete the entire process by document and media inspection. In the following years, with investments of their fair trade premium and support from different organizations, the cooperative -- with over 11,600 members, of which an estimated 3,356 are women -- has built its capacity to produce and export coffee to the highest of international standards.

This specific coffee was grown by a group of over 100 Pygmy people (including just over 50 women), ethnically native to the DRC and historically disenfranchised and enslaved. SOPACDI's Pygmies' Coffee Project allows this exploited group some financial independence and autonomy, and the co-op makes a point of keeping their coffees separate from others' so they rightfully receive compensation for what they grow.

Just one woman currently holds a seat on the board of the co-op, but SOPACDI plans to increase gender equality within the organization by incorporating gender equity in all of their activities and supporting the development of a market for women’s coffee. Institutionally, women in the DRC encounter many obstacles in agriculture, such as limited access to information, technology, and land, lack of political autonomy, and more. The SOPACDI co-op stand firmly in supporting these women farmers so that they can benefit directly from the crops they produce and receive due credit for providing for their families, communities, land, and country.
